Pregnancy May Accelerate Biological Ageing in Women, New Study Finds


Motherhood, a journey filled with love, sacrifice, and countless sleepless nights, may come at a surprising cost – accelerated biological aging. A groundbreaking study by researchers at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health suggests that pregnancy can have a significant impact on a woman's biological age.


The study, published in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences  delves into the previously unexplored territory of how childbearing affects the aging process in women. Researchers examined data from 1,735 young women participating in a long-term health study in the Philippines. The study meticulously analysed their reproductive histories and DNA samples to gauge the impact of pregnancy on biological aging.


Unveiling the Clock: Measuring Biological Aging

The research team employed a novel approach – "epigenetic clocks." These innovative genetic tools act as biological timekeepers, measuring a person's cellular age based on patterns of DNA methylation, a process that modifies gene expression. Six different epigenetic clocks were utilised in the study, providing a comprehensive picture of biological aging in the participants.


The Startling Revelation: Pregnancy and Accelerated Aging

The results were as surprising as they were significant. Every pregnancy reported by a woman was linked to an additional two to three months of biological aging. This correlation held true for the 825 young women included in this specific analysis. Additionally, women who reported multiple pregnancies during the six-year follow-up period exhibited a greater increase in biological age compared to women with no pregnancies. Simply put, the study revealed that women who had been pregnant appeared "biologically older" than their counterparts who had never carried a child.


Beyond Socioeconomic Factors: A Direct Link

The researchers meticulously controlled for various environmental factors to ensure the integrity of their findings. Socioeconomic status, smoking habits, and genetic diversity were all taken into account. Remarkably, the association between pregnancy and accelerated aging persisted even after these adjustments, suggesting a direct link between the two.


A Gender Divide: Fathers Unaffected

Intriguingly, the study found no such effect on the biological aging of men who fathered children. This observation points towards a potential link between the accelerated aging observed and the physiological demands of pregnancy or breastfeeding, rather than the act of parenthood itself.


"A Remarkable Finding" and Its Implications

Calen Ryan, the study's lead author and an associate research scientist at the Columbia Aging Center, expressed the significance of the findings. "Our findings suggest that pregnancy accelerates biological aging, and that these effects are apparent in young, high-fertility women," he stated.  Mr. Ryan emphasized the "remarkable" nature of this discovery, as it sheds light on the previously overlooked impact of pregnancy on a woman's molecular makeup.


"It highlights how we have been overlooking pregnancy and other key aspects of women's health when we study the aging process," he told Fox News. This observation underscores the need for a more holistic approach to women's health, one that acknowledges the unique biological consequences of pregnancy.


A Call for Support: Beyond the Gloom

While the study reveals a potential downside to pregnancy, Mr. Ryan is quick to caution against an overly pessimistic interpretation. "The overall effects were minimal and might be associated with high fertility, inconsistent access to healthcare, and nutrition," he clarified.  More research is needed to fully understand the long-term health implications of pregnancy-induced biological aging.


However, the study serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritising the well-being of mothers. "The message here is not all doom and gloom - but it does highlight the fact that we've been so focused on outcomes for infants that we often forget to take care of the moms," Mr. Ryan emphasises.  The study highlights the need for "strong medical, social and nutritional support for new moms" as a crucial component of ensuring their long-term health.
