Students Rally Against Tuition Hike at Tai Solarin University

In a powerful display of unity and discontent, students of Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, convened on the university premises to vehemently protest the recently unveiled tuition fee increases for the upcoming 2023–2024 academic session, as posted on the student portal.

The university management implemented significant hikes in tuition fees on Monday, with new students in education courses witnessing an astronomical jump from N76,500 to N230,000. Returning students in the same category faced an increase from N76,500 to N180,000. For fresh students pursuing pure courses, fees surged from N80,500 and N90,500 to N240,000, while returning students now grapple with an escalation from N80,500 and N90,500 to N190,000.

This abrupt escalation has triggered widespread concerns among the student body, leading to a mass protest. Armed with placards and a fervent spirit, students have taken to the streets, staging demonstrations at key locations like the Main Gate, the University Academic Building, and the Directorate of Students’ Affairs Building. Their collective goal is to vociferously express their objection to the proposed fee hikes.

According to a report, the students vehemently condemn the management's decision, deeming it inhumane. They argue that the management has overlooked the current economic climate of the country and the potential repercussions of such a drastic measure.

A released statement from the Students’ Union reflects the sentiment: “Our attention has been drawn to the university’s decision to increase our school fees on the portal. We firmly believe that this fee increment is unjust and places an unnecessary burden on students. Education is a right, and it should be accessible to all. We want to assure you that we are actively working to address this issue. We will engage in communication with the university management to express our concerns and negotiate for a fair and affordable education. Meanwhile, we encourage each one of you to stand together and say no to this fee increment. We must unite as a strong and collective voice to make our concerns heard.”

Akinjetan Emmanuel, the Students’ Union President, emphasized that the protest intends to convey a resounding message to the university management. "We refuse to accept this burden on our shoulders. It is crucial that we continue to raise our voices and make our concerns heard. By participating in the protest, we are advocating for fair and affordable education."
