NLC and TUC National-wide Strike: Bank. Electricity Workers and Others Join Nationwide Strike in Solidarity

In a significant show of solidarity, bank and electricity workers have joined the indefinite strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The strike, which commenced at midnight, aims to protest the recent assault on NLC president Joe Ajaero.

 

The NLC, in a Facebook post on Tuesday morning, shared circulars from affiliate unions, indicating their full compliance with the strike. Among the prominent unions lending their support are the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), the National Union of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP).

 

Several other unions have also joined the cause, including the National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), among others.

 

This development follows the directive issued by the organized labor movement on Monday, urging its members to mobilize for a nationwide strike in response to the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero. Festus Osifo, the President of TUC, emphasized that the strike would persist until governments at all levels fulfilled their responsibilities.

 

As workers from various sectors come together in solidarity, the nationwide strike sends a powerful message, calling for accountability and addressing the concerns of the organized labor movement in Nigeria. The NLC and TUC remain resolute in their commitment to pursuing the welfare and rights of workers across the country.
