| 4 stowaways arrested by Nigerian Navy |
An 18-year-old boy and three other who secretly hide (stowaways) inside a ship were apprehended by the Nigerian Navy ship BEECROFT on Monday aboard the container vessel TEME EXPRESS bound for Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Base Information Officer, H. A. Collins, made the disclosure in a statement on Wednesday.
The stowaways identified as 18-year-old Michael Daniel from Ondo State, 22-year-old Ebi Agrive from Bayelsa State, 23-year-old Lucky Amusu from Lagos State, and 28-year-old Goodness Edu from Akwa Ibom State were captured based on information received from the Maritime Domain Awareness Facility.
Commander Kolawole Oguntuga of NNS BEECROFT, quoted in the statement, explained that the arrest took place on November 13 during a routine patrol. The naval team, acting on intelligence from the Falcon Eye Alignment, boarded the TEME Express at the Lagos Anchorage, discovering movements inside the rudder compartment.
Upon boarding, the team successfully extracted the four stowaways, who were found with bags containing snacks and sachets of water. The stowaways, including Ebi Agrive, Lucky Amusu, Goodness Edu, and Michael Daniel, were subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service following established protocols.
Highlighting the risks involved, Commander Oguntuga emphasized the life-threatening situations stowaways expose themselves to during lengthy sea voyages, particularly in confined spaces. He also noted the potential security threats they pose to the vessel's crew, underscoring the serious consequences for the nation's image.
