In a significant breakthrough, the Anambra State Police Command has announced the interception of two criminal syndicates specializing in extorting money through menacing threats from unsuspecting members of the public. This revelation was made by the state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement issued on Thursday.
The suspects were apprehended by police operatives in Ozubulu, located in Ekwusigo Local Government Area, and Umunze in Orumba South LGA, following a meticulous investigation. Ikenga detailed the operations, stating, "Police operatives in Ozubulu and Umunze towns in Anambra State have smashed two deadly syndicates extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public via deadly threats."
He further explained that in Umunze, two suspects were arrested after sending threatening text messages to their victim, posing as members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and demanding a substantial sum under the threat of kidnapping and harm to him and his daughter.
Simultaneously, at Ozubulu, the police apprehended a male suspect who, using two different phone lines, issued life-threatening ultimatums to a businessman, claiming to be an ESN commander. The suspect ordered the victim to pay or face fatal consequences.
The success of these operations was credited to meticulous investigations leveraging both technology and human assets. The arrested individuals are currently in custody and will soon face legal proceedings.
The Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, commended the dedication and thorough efforts of the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) involved in unraveling the identities of the suspects and ensuring their apprehension. He reassured the public that the police command remains committed to motivating its personnel for optimal performance across the state.
