In a recent update, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the release of one of its supervisory presiding officers who was abducted at the Amassoma jetty in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on the eve of the governorship election.
The news was confirmed in a statement signed by Wilfred Ifogah, the Head of the Department of Voter Education and Publicity at the INEC office in Bayelsa State. Ifogah assured stakeholders and concerned citizens that the released victim is in good condition.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission, Bayelsa State Office, is pleased to inform stakeholders and concerned citizens in Nigeria that the INEC SPO earlier abducted on the eve of the election has been freed and is doing fine," the statement read.
The commission expressed gratitude to all those who played a role and showed concern for ensuring the safe release and return of the officer.
Earlier, INEC had reported the abduction of one of its Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPO) in Bayelsa State on the eve of the election. The officer, assigned to Registration Area 06 (Ossiama) in Sagbama LGA, was reportedly abducted while waiting to board a boat at Amassoma Jetty. Security agencies were promptly notified, and efforts were made to secure the safe release of the abducted officer.
