In a significant development, the Chief Judge of Niger State, Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik, has slated December 13, 2023, for a decisive ruling in the culpable homicide case involving Stephen Jiya.
Recapping the tragic incident, Jiya, a resident of Suleja, visited his biological mother in Dutsen-Kura, Minna, on December 20, 2021, and shockingly set her ablaze using a bottle of petrol while she was cooking in her kitchen.
Following thorough interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) of the Niger State Police Command, Jiya admitted to the crime. He claimed he killed his mother due to alleged intrusion into his marital affairs.
Neighbors rushed the victim to General Hospital Minna, and later, she was transferred to another medical facility, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Previously arraigned before a magistrate court on provisional charges, Jiya awaited legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for proper prosecution in a competent court. The DPP formally charged him in the High Court on September 14, 2022, under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law, carrying the death penalty if found guilty.
The case's hearing is scheduled to commence on November 23, 2022, with Chief Judge Justice Abdulmalik earmarking the final decision for December 13, 2023. Stay tuned for the court's ruling on this deeply distressing case.
