Nigeria President Approves 6 New Higher Institutions Take-off

President Bola Tinubu has granted authorization for the commencement of academic operations at six out of the 14 newly established universities, which were inaugurated in the final days of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The disclosure was made by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, following a private meeting with President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

In the initial phase, two universities will be launched in the field of agriculture, two as colleges of education, and two focusing on medicine. Professor Mamman emphasized the considerable financial implications of establishing numerous tertiary institutions simultaneously, citing the need for substantial funds for infrastructure, staff recruitment, and other necessities during the initial stages.

“These institutions, about a dozen or 14, are highly capital-intensive, especially at that take-off stage,” he noted. Despite the financial challenges, the minister affirmed that the President has strategically aligned these institutions with the key mandates and priorities of his administration.

The specialized nature of these institutions, including colleges of education, agricultural institutions, and medical schools, supports the government’s focus on key priority areas. Instead of reconsidering the approval, President Tinubu suggested staggering the implementation due to financial constraints. The implementation will start with six universities, with two each in agriculture, colleges of education, and medicine.

Among the universities established during this period are David Nweze Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences in Uburu, Federal University of Transport in Daura, Katsina, Shehu Shagari University of Education in Sokoto, and Admiralty University in Ibusa, Delta State.

The Minister also reported that President Tinubu has approved the completion of the National Library, a significant national monument. The completion is projected to take 21 months, and the President expressed satisfaction with the proposal during the briefing.
