Lagos State House of Assembly |
The Lagos State House of
Assembly has called upon the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to conduct a
thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of
Adebola Akin-Bright, whose small intestine went missing following surgery.
Accepting the recommendations put forth by the House's five-man ad hoc
committee on the matter, the Assembly specifically urged the council to
intensify its probe into Dr Baiyewu Abayomi, addressing concerns of alleged
medical negligence. The House emphasized the importance of ensuring justice
prevails upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Akin-Bright underwent surgery
at Obitoks Hospital, where his small intestine went missing, leading to
heightened scrutiny of Dr Abayomi's practices. The Assembly, in its resolution,
not only sought accountability for the alleged medical negligence but also
directed attention to broader healthcare issues.
According to the Punch the Assembly called on
the Lagos State Teaching Hospital to enhance its focus on patients,
particularly the younger demographic, during their admission in the tertiary
health facility. Recognizing the timely response of the Nigeria Police Force,
Lagos Command, in complying with the House's resolution to arrest Dr Baiyewu
Abayomi, the Assembly commended the police for their prompt action.
The Lagos
State House of Assembly appealed to the Lagos State Government to provide
support to Mrs Abiodun Akin Bright, the mother of the deceased Adebola
Akin-Bright, in covering the expenses incurred while endeavoring to save her
son's life. This gesture reflects the Assembly's commitment to addressing the
broader implications of the incident and extending support to the affected
family.
The
Assembly's comprehensive response to the Akin-Bright case underscores the need
for accountability in healthcare practices, improvements in patient care
standards, and the importance of governmental and institutional support for
families affected by medical tragedies.
