" Second-hand clothes are for dead people" President Bans Tokubo Clothes

Uganda's President, Yoweri Museveni, has made a decision to stop the importation of used clothes (popularly called Tokunbo clothes in Nigeria) and also electricity meters and cables.

The president in his message said “Stop buying second-hand clothes, these clothes are for dead people; when they (whites) die, they organize the clothes and bring them to Africa. Support me, we stop importation of second-hand clothes so that we buy our own clothes made locally”

 

As reported by Daily Monitor newspaper in Uganda, he also declared his determination toward the achievement of this goal by saying “Ihave declared war on second-hand clothes to promote African wear. We are going to stop importation of second-hand clothes to create jobs from textile factories. Anybody who will stand in my way, I will crush him. We will not allow second-hand clothes to enter into the country anymore”

 

 President Museveni gave this directive during the inauguration of ten factories situated in Mbale, a town in eastern Uganda on Thursday, August 24^th, 2023. These factories are managed by Chinese investors, which are part of the Sino-Uganda Industrial Park, a joint project between the Ugandan government and Chinese investors.

 

This new movement by this president is to promote the country’s 2014 government policy called Buy Uganda Build Uganda (BUBU)
