After an extended hours of power outage on Friday 25th if August 2023 that cast Nairobi's main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, into darkness, Kenya's airports authority chief, Alex Gitari, has been dismissed from his position.
K24 TV, a Keyan news station, reported the decision to remove Alex Gitari was announced by Transport Minister Kipchumba Murkomen, who expressed remorse for the chaotic situation that unfolded. Minister Murkomen also cited political interference as a contributor to the disarray, which had a demoralizing impact on the airport's workforce.
Outrage has surged across Kenyan social media platforms, primarily because the main airport had not employed functional backup generators. The repercussions of this power disruption have reverberated through other segments of the country as well.
In response, the transport minister disclosed that two generators procured for the airport two years ago have yet to be activated.
Although power cuts are known in Kenya but a nationwide outage of this duration and scale, impacting key locations like the airport, hospitals, and even State House, remains a rare occurrence. In a nation where issues are often attributed to corruption, the immense financial mismanagement has consistently hindered the nation's progress.
In addition to the removal of Mr. Gitari, another senior official within the civil aviation authority has also been ousted, while the manager of Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has been demoted to a role at Moi International Airport that serves the city of Mombasa and surrounding communities.
