The newly appointed
FCT Abuja Minister, Nyesom Wike, has taken swift action in response to the
tragic collapse of a two-storey building on Lagos Crescent in Garki 2, Abuja.
Following a thorough inspection of the disaster site alongside Development
Control officers, the minister has issued an immediate order for the arrest of
the building's landlord.
The
collapse, which occurred on a fateful Wednesday night, claimed the lives of two
individuals, while the strenuous efforts of rescue teams managed to pull 37
people from the wreckage. Swiftly, the rescued victims were rushed to a medical
facility for the necessary attention, their well-being a top priority for the
emergency agency.
Expressing
his sentiments amidst the grim scene, Wike lauded the ongoing rescue endeavors
while lamenting the sheer misfortune of the incident. He emphasized the
importance of adhering to proper regulations and codes to prevent such tragic
events. "When government says it will take actions in areas we believe
there are illegal developments or buildings that don't comply with the standard
codes, it is not as if anybody has any personal vendetta, but for me, it is for
us to do the right thing," he explained.
The gravity
of the situation was not lost on Wike as he drew attention to the significance
of proper planning in urban development to avert such disasters. "Cities
are planned to forestall this kind of occurrences," he noted. He also
highlighted the need for accountability in the aftermath of such incidents.
"I will ask that we must identify and arrest the owner of this property.
It is very important," Wike asserted. Furthermore, he made it clear that
government intervention would extend to prevent any further development at the
site of the collapse.
Wike
passionately urged all stakeholders to align their efforts with the
government's actions, emphasizing that these decisions, although sometimes
discomforting, ultimately serve the greater good. "No one has come here to
say I like A, I don't like B," he stated, highlighting the communal nature
of such decisions.
Addressing
the financial burden on the survivors, Wike didn't hesitate. He directed the
FCT Permanent Secretary, Olusade Adesola, to promptly mobilize funds to cover
the hospital bills of the rescued individuals, ensuring their well-being beyond
the immediate disaster.
In his social handle, he sympathised with the bereaved families while promising acurate responses.
