In Busia County's Suo area in Kenya, law enforcement officers stationed at a roadblock successfully intercepted a significant consignment of marijuana, consisting of twelve sacks.
The illicit substance was neatly packed and being transported in a funeral van vehicle towards to a place called Kisumu, when an officer suspected an abnormal smelling coming out of the vehicle and the driver was stopped for searching.
A statement released by the Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) through her social handle ,x, disclosed that the apprehension occurred at approximately 7 pm on Sunday, August 27, 2023. The operation unfolded involving a white Nissan van adorned with the logo of Rafiki Funeral Services-Othaya.
As the driver of the vehicle interacted with the police at the roadblock, their behaviour caught the attention of one of the officers. Subsequently, an unusual odor coming from the interior of the van was detected, which was unpredictable with human remains – the expected cargo.
The statement from the DCI explained, "His concerns were validated shortly after, when, in collaboration with his fellow officers, a thorough search of the vehicle was conducted. This search revealed twelve sacks of cannabis sativa carefully positioned on the van's seats and floor."
The individual behind the wheel of the hearse, identified as Hussein Otita, was promptly arrested. The vehicle bearing the registration number KCV 402Y was confiscated as evidence.
Simultaneously, in another location, law enforcement officers managed to intercept a separate drug transportation effort. This operation resulted in the confiscation of 58 kilograms of marijuana that was being conveyed by a motorcycle.
Providing further insight, the DCI disclosed, "Detectives from the Anti Narcotics Unit have since assumed responsibility for the investigation into these two cases." This signifies the intensified focus and commitment to addressing drug-related offenses within the jurisdiction.
