Slash Your Electricity Bills: 6 Proven Methods for Success

In Nigeria , Ghana , Australia and other countries around the world, people have been seriously lamenting the hike in electricity tariffs and how to maintain household expenses at the lowest possible level. Electricity is one of the vital amenities for both households and the development of robust economic activities in any country that aims to enjoy a high standard of living and exponential economic growth.

Household electricity usage cannot be underestimated. For instance, according to the Office for National Statistics (UK), household electricity prices rose by 17.3% as of June 2023 and have been one of the major contributors to overall inflation since April 2022 in the United Kingdom. Every family needs a constant electricity supply to experience a meaningful and happy home life. It is a crucial aspect of socio-economic well-being and healthy living at home.

Since electricity has to be paid for, we need to ensure that it is regulated so that it does not become one of those bills that are difficult to manage on a daily or monthly basis.

Here are some steps that can be taken to reduce your electricity bill at home and at work:

Switch off and unplug electronic appliances when not in use:

Whenever an electronic device is not in use or needed to perform a function, turn it off. Electronics in standby mode consume a certain amount of electricity to be in such a position. Why waste your power when your device is not in use? Gadgets like televisions, sound systems, air conditioners, lights, microwaves, fans, and washing machines must be switched off and unplugged whenever you leave home or the workplace. If your refrigerator has nothing to keep cool, turn it off and unplug it as well.

Use energy-saving lighting

According to research, traditional incandescent lights (locally called globes or bulbs) consume more electricity than LED (light-emitting diode) lights. Both perform the same function of illuminating our surroundings, but your incandescent lights must be replaced with LED lights if you want to reduce your energy consumption. LED lights require a lesser electricity supply to brighten a place and last longer before needing replacement. LED lights are available in different colors and shapes, and some are solar-powered, making them ideal for outdoor security lighting without using electricity.

Encourage natural lighting and ventilation:

Opening windows and skylights during the daytime when the weather is temperate can reduce your electricity consumption. There are times when you don't need air conditioners or artificial lighting to get things done, especially when the day is bright and sunny. Every household and business must learn to take advantage of climatic conditions to regulate their spaces and enjoy minimal electricity consumption.

Upgrade to energy-saving appliances

When you are buying new appliances for home or office use, look for the "Energy-Star label" on such products. The Energy Star labels on appliances indicate that such electronic appliances consume lower electricity when compared with the standard power consumption of other products in same categories. As you know, when your electronics require little power to function, you will save a lot on your electricity bill. While appliances with the energy star label rating might be more expensive, they will significantly reduce your utility bill for power consumption in the long run.

Regulate high-powered appliance usage

Heat-generating appliances consume more electrical power to operate. Items like microwaves, irons, ovens, electric kettles, and electric cookers must be scheduled for usage. Try to switch off other appliances when using these high-powered items to reduce your power bill. Avoid encouraging prolonged usage of these items unless it is for business purposes. You can occasionally opt for alternatives, such as hand-washing your clothes and plates instead of using a laundry machine and dishwasher, drying your clothes in the sun instead of using the tumble-dry function of your laundry machine, and neatly folding your cotton t-shirts and clothes to avoid ironing them every time.

Ikeja Electric, one of the energy distribution companies in Nigeria, shows a chart stating the energy consumption of some domestic appliances. This can be a guide on how you should regulate your appliances to prevent high electricity bills.

Look for an alternative source of energy

While the initial cost of fittings and installation for a solar power system may be very expensive, its long-term benefits cannot be overemphasized. Depending on your budget or appliance usage, you can install a solar power system in your home or workplace to cut yourself off from the local electricity grid. If you can afford this option either fully or for certain regular-use appliances, you will save a lot of money in the future on your electricity bill.

Finally, It is essential to create awareness about the significance of energy conservation among family members, employees, and communities to promote a culture of responsible electricity usage.
